So I'm home today, called in sick. I've been stressed because of the job lately. Anyone know of any real ways of relieving stress and I do mean work related stress factors rather than sexual ones which too often people think of.

My Beijing trip was quite fantastic. Was upgraded to Executive Class on the way there with Air Canada -- goodness for being an ACE Holdings Employee. The flight was most certainly a long one but with the extra amenities it made for a nice touch. Arriving in Beijing I expected it to be a bit chilly, but alas it was quite warm. Going through all the bureaucratic hurdles of quarantine and form filling, which I feel could be improved upon markedly, we met our guide after the baggage claim.

Beijing is ultra polluted. The three mornings we were there were very smoggy, so much so that you could not even see more than 100 meters infront of you! No lies... But by the afternoon all the smog burned off so you got some sort of blue sky. Beijing drivers are crazy, but alas the most skilled at not hitting people or getting into many accidents, despite the statistic that 250 people doe each year from traffic accidents.

My job there was actually to inspect hotels that we offered or that we should offer in the future. Many of the hotels were beautiful and some were sub par. Took many pictures of the hotels which was my main goal so please forgive me for having only a small number of photos of myself or the journey. PLUS! The digi camera that I brought over kept on eating my batteries.

Putting aside the hotels, we had the opportunity of meeting our work counterparts in Beijing which was an interesting experience. We also had some time reserved to visit the Great Wall, Tian'anmen Square, and the Forbidden City (All of which were beautiful sites to see and the grandeur and the realization of being near the Great Wall is indeed emotional -- or maybe that was the exhaustion from climbing to the 4th tower). Time was also set aside to visit the Silk Market and do some hardcore bargaining. Try getting four Burberry long sleeve polo shirts for CAD$4 each! lol.. ok so they are knock offs but they look really good! The one thing that I'm upset with is that I did not make my own time to go round Beijing to see the socialist art, or have look around the embassy district. Hmm kinda down, but I'll go back to Beijing soon enough.

The city though is filled with such mystic and tradition yet is modernizing at a rapid pace. Construction is ongoing to get prepared for the Olympics in 2008 -- though the city is going at it at a phenomenal rate. The city is always alive, as I noticed one night I got lost looking for an internet cafe! I started walking in the direction the conceirge told me and just kept going -- of course not being able to read Chinese other than the basics does not help. I ended up walking around the city for 2 hours! But people are always out and I felt very safe. But then again I'm Asian and look Chinese ? *shrugs* People are always around, stalls are still open, you can light up a cigarette without dirty sneers and such. So I guess in a way you can call it a smokers paradise. Another thing that shocked me was the amount of Koreans in Beijing -- whether they were tourists from Korea or were just Koreans studying or living there, but geeze! Korean culture definitely has some role playing on there.

After the whirlwind tour around of Beijing hotels, the Great Wall, and intense shopping it was time to go home. Waking up to a very smoggy morning I packed up all my carry on's and checked out. Had a buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant like I did every morning -- though this time I pigged out. Where else can you get dim sum, an omlette, fish heads and tails, delicious baked goods, and congee all at one sitting?! Besides I knew that the flight back we would not have the opportunity of being upgraded -- so no yummy rack of lamb or such. Picked up by our guide we headed to the airport. Upon arriving and passing through to the check-in lines we said good bye to our professional guide and headed to the familiar Air Canada signs. Though once again in style Beijing has first the passport control desk, to which I received quite a bit more questioning. My passport had been in the wash and had a feeling he thought that I was a defector just trying to get away. After confirming my signature and two destinations that I had been to with the stamps in the passport I presume he felt safe in letting me through to the bag check, then in the gate area. Phew.

I've included some photos in this entry -- hope you enjoy and consider flying to Beijing!

There are a lot of things you can do to reduce your level of stress.  I'm not an expert, so I'll just tell you what works for me.

First, get things organized.  I feel a lot less stressed when I have a plan to follow.  A "To Do" List is insufficient.  I'd recommend reading "First Things First".  It gives you a very practical way to organize things that goes beyond the traditional "Time Management" techniques that people spout off over and over.

Second, get active.  My stress levels are leveled off by regular exercise.  Do what works for you though.  I like weight training and BodyCombat classes.  Some people feel better after jogging, others after doing yoga, and others just need to go for a long walk.  Physical activity is good for the body and the mind.  Ever watch Legally Blonde? "Exercise produces endorphins.  Endorphins make you happy.  Happy people don't kill their husbands." (In your case, "Happy people don't quit their jobs.")

Third, learn when to say "No."  You'd be surprised how easy it is, and how much your stress levels drop when you aren't shouldering other people's burdens.  You do your job, and other people do theirs.  Don't let other people's stress become your stress.

That's it.  Hope that helps.

Too much work related stress - hmm... FireAndIce's advice is actually quite good. The book First Things First is great, forces you to focus on what's really important. Here are some more tips.
1. Humor - use it often and enjoy a good laugh. Laughter releases a hormone (endorphins?) that will help combat stress.
2. Keep yourself hydrated.
3. Take frequent short breaks at work if you can, a 5 minute walk can do wonders. Have a good stretch while you're at it and take in some deep breaths (might be tough in the Beijing smog).
4. Don't let others control how you react - easier said then done. Know what your hotspots are and recognize when others are about to push your button.
5. Don't let work dominate your life - it's just a way to make money so that you can enjoy life. If you happen to love your job - great!

Thanks for the pics... hope to visit China one of these days.

to me i dont really get stressed out that much because when i start to get stressed i just drop everything that i am doing and that i need to do to just relax and chill...then i am able to concentrate better and also i like to manage my time (for lack of a better phrase) i would die without my planner and cell phone (for the calendar inside, and the alerts it can give!) i like to be well organized so that i do not become stressed out often but whne i do...its for a big reason

and it looks like you had alot of fun on your trip to beijing, i need a vacation...but sadly i am still in school...and after that i have college...yay but once my life starts i think it will be pretty good

yeah.. i went to beijing twice for this school event. ^^ I loved being at the forbidden square cuz there was this hugeee vast open space and it was so cool... and I loved the view from the great wall of china.. xD  Though if you were where I was, the ride up there on the ski lift was kindof scary. xD  Did you go down the wall through the slide cart thingie? If you haven't, do it! it's a lot of fun. xD  Beijing is such an amazing city but yeah.. the air is so dry and dirty.. the first time I went i was recovering from an fever right before and I was coughing nonstop. ><  Being able to travel alot on your job sure sounds like a lot of fun. :)

Stress is not a nice thing and when it affects you so much that you end up taking time off

work it becomes a big problem. Have you considered going to your doctors to see if he can

suggest anything for you? I think FireandIce1975 summed it up well as how do deal with stress.

On a personal note I deal with it in the follow way which is very similar to FireAndIce1975.

Get organised. I was amazed how much more I was able to be more relaxed when I knew exactly

what I was doing but it has also made me a bit of a freak as I like everything organised.

Yoga. I go to class twice a week and find it really relaxing and find I can switch off

quiet well now from the rest of the world.

Time out for myself to do the things I want to do.

I like to party hard too. I feel that if I work hard then I must be able to party hard. Now

don’t get me wrong, I don’t go and get drunk every weekend and stay out all night

but do go out when I can and let my "hair down"

I have never been to Asia before but will be going with my BF to Hong Kong and Taiwan next

year. I do like you pictures of Beijing and post about the city. I have always had a

fascination with Asia but funny enough have not travelled there as yet.

Hope you feel better soon.
